The majority of homeowners have never heard of PEX because most homes are repiped only once in their lifetime. In comparison, copper remains a highly reliable pipe that has performed excellently for the home construction industry for over 60 years. Manufacturers introduced PEX in the early 1970s for floor heating, then in the early 1990s for use in residential plumbing systems. Additionally, copper piping was developed to replace steel galvanized pipes during the early 1960s for many of the same reasons PEX is being used to replace copper. Copper was significantly lighter, better to work with, and less expensive to install than steel galvanized pipes at the time. It also addressed any health issues associated with the pipes. As a response, PEX quickly became the preferred tubing for new home building and repiping in the twenty-first century.
